WHAT IS BNG BLK?

Overview

BNG BLK (Being Black) is a global creative platform where Black photographers from around the world share work across all genres—including documentary, fine art, portraiture, conceptual, and experimental—in response to one simple yet profound question: What does it mean to be Black? Through photography, storytelling, and community engagement, the platform invites artists to explore identity, history, culture, resistance, joy, and imagination across the African Diaspora. Each contribution reflects a personal perspective while contributing to a larger collective narrative. Serving as both an artistic space and a living archive, BNG BLK captures untold stories of resilience, heritage, and creativity while amplifying voices too often overlooked. In doing so, the platform reveals how shared histories and lived experiences connect Black communities worldwide, honoring both unity and diversity.

Our Vision

BNG BLK is guided by four core principles that shape every aspect of the platform and its work. We document diverse experiences by capturing authentic stories from Black communities across continents and cultures. We amplify marginalized voices by centering perspectives often excluded from mainstream narratives. We connect shared histories by highlighting the cultural and historical threads that unite the African Diaspora. And we celebrate resilience by honoring the strength, creativity, and beauty of Black identity in all its forms.

Project Collaboration

BNG BLK is built through collaborative partnerships with artists, communities, and cultural institutions. Photographers document daily life and engage in meaningful community interviews, ensuring that stories are rooted in lived experience. Individual projects come together to form a collective narrative that reflects both personal and shared histories. The work is curated and presented as a monograph, traveling exhibition, and documentary series, with each phase—partnership, documentation, curation, and exhibition—guided by integrity, respect, and care.

Global Perspectives

BNG BLK spans multiple regions, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the African Diaspora across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and everywhere Black people exist. These locations serve as both historical reference points and contemporary centers of culture, creativity, and resistance. By working across borders and communities, the project builds a global understanding of Black life while honoring local traditions and lived realities.

Cultural Connections

BNG BLK explores how shared histories manifest differently across geographical boundaries, revealing the many ways Black identity is shaped by place, memory, and movement. Common roots and diaspora experiences form a collective foundation, while distinct cultural expressions evolve through language, tradition, and migration. By documenting contemporary realities alongside future visions, the project captures the ongoing evolution of modern Black identity. Together, these elements illuminate both unity and diversity within the global Black experience.

Visual Storytelling Approach

BNG BLK prioritizes ethical, collaborative, and community-centered storytelling. Through authentic portraiture, photographers work closely with participants to ensure dignified and respectful representation. Environmental context is central to the work, with images documenting living spaces, workplaces, and community gatherings that reveal daily life and cultural settings. Present-day photography is paired with archival materials to highlight continuity and change, while personal narration allows participants to guide the visual narrative in their own voices.

Anticipated Impact

BNG BLK is designed to create lasting social, cultural, and educational value. The project deepens public understanding of Black experiences and challenges simplified narratives through education and awareness. It empowers communities by validating and preserving their stories, while building an important historical archive for future generations. By fostering connections across borders, BNG BLK strengthens dialogue, solidarity, and collective pride throughout the global Black community.
